Past IT – from CALL to EdTech: a history – Gavin Dudeney

Gavin’s talk was about his relationship between technology and his life; personal landmarks, educational technology landmarks, lessons from the past and news of the future.

Educational technology has three key terms. These are:

  1. Hype cycles (Gardner’s Hype cycles)
  2. Normalisation  (Bax:2000) e.g. IWB
  3. Obsolescence

Gavin learns from the past that the trainers are not using technology in their courses. To have the teachers use technology, it should start from the very beginning. As the last part of his speech he expressed his views about the future. He showed us a photo that the teacher was a robot. The Picture implied that robots may be hired as language teachers in the future.
